Bernie vs. Hillary

Bernie Sanders once said, “I’m very proud that the state of Vermont banned fracking. I hope communities all over California, and all over America do the same.” Sen. Sanders has long been a champion for the environment and, as a presidential candidate, has pushed against fracking.

“Fracking,” Mr. Sanders has knowledgably stated, “is inherently unsafe. Regulated fracking still results in harm to people’s health, accidental spills of toxic waste, air pollution, earthquakes, drinking water contamination, habitat destruction and even more climate change.” I, too, understand this to be true.

Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, has left a pro-fracking legacy. As Secretary of State, she worked closely with energy companies to spread fracking around the world as part of a push to boost global energy supplies and undercut the power of adversaries such as Russia.

Mrs. Clinton has frequently said “fracking needs to be conducted and regulated properly so it doesn’t cause excessive environmental harm.” She believes that can be done. But, her belief puts her at odds with most of the environmental community including me.

For the environment, the best primary choice for the Democrats’ presidential candidate is Bernie Sanders—no doubt about it.
