Bello Mundo's Colombia Roast and Tolosa Winery and Vineyards' 2014 Viognier

When I first heard about Bello Mundo’s “no laptop” area, I was a little annoyed. It seemed pompous to tell your patrons what technology they could or couldn’t use while sipping the coffee they had paid for with their hard-earned money. But then I finally checked out the coffee house’s expanded digs, and I have to say … I really like the concept! Hear me out. Think about it: How irritated are you when you’re trying to work on your laptop, yet keep getting distracted by loud college kids conversing in your ear? And you talkers: How often have you been sharing a really funny story about last Saturday night when a joyless laptop zombie shoots you an icy death glare? At Bello Mundo, the problem is solved once and for all. I sipped my mug of Colombia Roast (with caramelized sugar notes and hint of fig) while getting a little work done on my iPhone. I sat in the middle of the two zones, just to be polite and respectful.

Bello Mundo’s Colombia Roast$2.75 for a mug of drip coffee; 980 Monterey St., SLO.

Leftover Christmas ham, meet your freaking soul mate. Perfumed with rich orange zest and jasmine and a dash of bright acidity, this crisp, anytime viognier is exactly what I need to unwind from all that alleged holiday joy.

Tolosa Winery and Vineyards’ 2014 Viognier$28 a bottle; 4910 Edna Road, Edna Valley.

Hayley Thomas is ready for a whole new year of drinks! Keep ’em coming at
