Basque food and spring eats 

• Where locals once celebrated Oktoberfest—at Old Vienna in Shell Beach—they can now enjoy food inspired by a different region in Europe: Basque country. Alphy’s Basque Chateau announced an April 16 opening, offering family-style dishes, a full bar, and a kids’ menu. Diners hungry for a taste of French-Spanish flavors can tuck into roasted rack of lamb, filet mignon, chicken, pork chops, shrimp, scallops Provencal, and fish, as well as a bar menu that includes small sandwiches known as bocadillos, calamari, and sherry-marinated figs served with aged goat cheese and fresh basil.

The chateau is open Monday through Thursday, 2 to 10 p.m.; Friday, 2 p.m. to midnight; Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 1527 Shell Beach Road. Call 773-6280.

• Spring has sprung, and there are several holidays that can’t be ignored. Get your forks ready, because they all involve food. 

April 19 is the one day a year when it’s totally OK to be a little smelly. That’s because it’s international garlic day. While citizens of Gilroy rejoice and celebrate in the city’s main export, you too can partake in the wonders garlic has to offer.

Garlic is believed to be a great preventative against heart disease and it is also believed to protect against certain cancers. Garlic has a flavorful history beyond its medicinal uses. In Hinduism, garlic is believed to stimulate desire, so some devoted Hindus forgo garlic in food used for religious purposes. In China, the sticky liquid within the bulb cloves is used as an adhesive.

For garlic day, be sure to stop by Rooster Creek in Arroyo Grande village and get yourself a grilled veggie, goat cheese, and roasted garlic pizza for $10.

May just happens to be international egg month, and the United States produces about 75 billion eggs per year. With 280 million laying birds in the country, there are endless opportunities for egg lovers to enjoy nature’s most compact source of protein.

Stop by Louisa’s Place for one of their criminally good omelets. A great springtime egg option can be found in the Hawaiian omelet, which includes diced ham, pineapple, brown sugar, and jack cheese for $9.95.

The second week of May also happens to be hamburger week. Perhaps the most American of all fast foods, the hamburger actually originated in Hamburg, Germany, and was introduced to the states via the many immigrants that made the USA their new home.

Fosters Freeze in downtown San Luis Obispo makes a killer burger at a super reasonable price. The Old Fashion combo (because what would a burger be without a drink and fries, too?) goes for less than $6.

There’s lots of culinary excitement to look forward to in the coming weeks. No matter how you choose to celebrate that thing that binds us all together, be sure to include your loved ones in on the festivities—because no one should eat alone.
