Artistry meets accountability

Artists—let’s extend that to writers, too—are pretty lazy folk sometimes. There’s always something keeping creative people from being creative, despite all their intentions. However, a new artist’s workshop, called “Seasons of Creativity,” aims to put a stop to those procrastinating ways.

Guided by seasoned artist Michael Ackerman and taking place at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, the workshop consists of four intensive weekend sessions—one per season for a whole year—helping artists develop and present a cohesive body of work. Reading assignments, handouts, and an online discussion group are all part of the course.

But here’s the most exciting part: each participant who completes the workshop will end the year with a guaranteed exhibit of their work at a local business.

Here’s how the year breaks down:

• Season One—Spring/Planting: This workshop, which kicks off Saturday, April 21, places emphasis on “development, planning, and hands-on experimentation,” according to the Museum of Art.

• Season Two—Summer/Cultivation: In late July, students will bring in the pieces they’ve been working on and receive guidance on how to take the work to new heights. The workshop will help artists discover solutions to the creative blocks that prevent them from completing projects. The group will also collaborate on a mural.

• Season Three—Fall/Harvest: Once each artist’s body of work is completed, the workshop’s focus will shift to planning and marketing the upcoming exhibition.

• Season Four—Winter/Dormancy: Finally, artists will present their work in an exhibition. Work created over the past year will be evaluated and discussed, and students will be given the opportunity to outline the next project.

The workshop is limited to 10 participants, of either intermediate or advanced levels. Interested artists can sign up at sloma.org. Email SLOMA Assistant Director Muara Johnston with questions. The deadline for enrollment is Sunday, April 15.
