# "[The festival] is a great way to warm up to the idea of better weather," said Kim Wykoff, director of rooms and marketing. "It's a big wonderful family day."

The winners of two new contests will be announced at the event: the "Stop and Smell the Roses" photo contest, which invited floral images from throughout the county, and the "What Can You Make with Our Boysenberry Spread?" dessert contest, which required entrants to purchase the popular spread from the gift shop and turn it into any kind of after-dinner treat.

The photo contest winner's image will be displayed in the hotel lobby and turned into a keepsake at the gift shop. The winning dessert will be turned into a menu item at the restaurant for a month.

Contestants have already pre-registered their entries, but guests can still participate by watching the top 10 desserts being judged at noon by several local media celebrities.

The rest of the day is loaded with free activities and booths, including a petting zoo, inn room tours, hand massages, and live music from Louie Ortega.

In past years, the Apple Farm has held a similar open house event in November to kick off its busy Christmas season. The event, called Traditional Holidays, has consistently been a success, Wykoff said.

"I'm hoping that this is going to be the same sort of thing, but in a different season, where people can see the Apple Farm in its full glory," said Floral Manager Alda Hughes, who will be running a demonstration booth at the event.

The festival takes place in the lower parking lot, a few feet from the Millhouse, an old-fashioned gourmet shop that will offer free samples of ice cream, popcorn, and cider.

The Apple Farm itself is located at 2015 Monterey St. Barbecue meals, beer and wine by the glass, and a variety of products will be available for purchase at the event.
