An open letter to avocado growers

Dear Avocado Companies,

On Friday, May 29, 2015, at 10:15 a.m. I was driving eastbound on Highway 41 from Morro Bay, when a low flying helicopter flew overhead circling an avocado grove on the south side of the road near the avocado ranch. Needless to say, the helicopter began spraying liquid over the avocado grove and onto passing cars. I happened to be one of the cars that was sprayed with what appeared to be pesticide. It is unclear what pesticide(s) was being used. I had to use the windshield wipers to clean off the residue. How long has this been practiced before a citizen said something? Do you even care about the people driving by? It appears that there was little or no concern, which in my mind amounts to negligence.

Avocado companies, I want to be clear that I do not support the unhealthy practice of pesticide spraying of your orchards. I, like so many other Americans, do not support the use of pesticides and herbicides due to the negative impact that they have had on people, wildlife, and the environment. As a community member from the Central Coast, I can safely say that these practices are very frustrating for town folk, who feel that they have little say into what the local farms wish to do, especially when it concerns the people and environment surrounding the agriculture area.
