An obvious solution to gun violence

I’d like to thank Jim Mallon for his well written, common sense commentary regarding the ongoing gun control debate (“The real threat,” June 16). I also found myself agreeing with both Dan Dow’s comments reported in the Shredder as well as the Shredder’s proposed solution (“Guns for everybody”).

I believe Dan Dow is correct in his contention that rather than focusing on guns as the root cause of gun violence we, instead, come to terms with the fact that “PEOPLE are and must be held responsible for their actions!” Responsible gun owners should not have their rights infringed upon due to the misdeeds of criminals, terrorists, and the mentally unstable.

I also agree with the Shredder’s desire to amend the Constitution to achieve “a more stringent screening process to obtain a gun, and a training, licensing, and registration program.” Shredder continues, “It’s such an obvious solution it’s ridiculous.” So I believe in the value of “the law” to civil society and if we, as a society, wish to change the law, we should do so. The only problem, as I see it, is that only a minority of Americans want to mess with the Second Amendment. If that were the case, you’d have to wonder why this “obvious solution” has so far made no progress.

The American people, for whatever their reasons, don’t want to limit their “rights” to gun ownership and no amount of confrontation or ridicule is likely to change their minds. So beat your heads against the wall if you must, but when you return to your senses why not join with responsible gun owners to work on creative solutions to reduce all types of gun violence. Wouldn’t that be a more worthwhile undertaking?
