Re: “Extreme politics have no place in local government

People like "Kevin" really hate it when his tribe's hatred is brought to light, and he responds by insisting that we must stop hating haters for their hatred. The mind reels.

Re: “tRump's America

"And parents say if the State of California enforces the vaccine mandates in order for children to be enrolled in all schools, they will pull their kids out of California schools and even leave the state." So it says in the most recent issue of COLAB's "Weekly Update," the right wing rag of Santa Barbara carpetbaggers Mike Brown and Andy Caldwell, the puppet masters of Lynn Compton and Debbie Arnold. Of course, California's children (and unvaccinated adults) would be much safer if unvaccinated persons DID leave the State, as "herd immunity" is a real thing.

But I don't believe in pimping "anti-vaxx" disinformation for some of the same reasons that I don't believe that either the NT or the Bay Theatre should promote pro-pedophilia beliefs: Both have long-lasting deleterious effects on the health and well-being of children (and society) and both exist only to satisfy the depravity of their proponents. Children die from diseases that are wholly preventable, and the science is not unsettled in the least. Yes, a very few children cannot receive vaccinations for medical reasons, and the rest of us vaccinate in order to protect THEM. But to pretend that anti-science "anti-vaxx" hystericals must be granted equal access to your media and our community's theaters (theatres, if you must) in the name of free speech is to misunderstand completely the applicability of the 1st Amendment--something any freshman journalist or opinion scribe should comprehend.

Re: “Debbie Arnold, Ellen Beraud square off in fight for SLO County Board of Supervisors' swing seat

It would be a nice change if the 5th District Supervisor represented the people who live in the District, rather than just those corporate interests who pull the strings of her campaign. The lure of donations is strong--I get that--but imagine having a Supervisor who meets with the residents of a community, the business owners, the teachers, the construction workers, the moms and dads and students and grandparents whose everyday lives depend on good decisions and informed choices. Imagine having a Supervisor who represents those who did not vote for her as well as those who did; those who did not donate to her campaign, and those who did. Imagine having a Supervisor who does not decide her votes based solely on what COLAB directs, but meets in townhalls and small groups and consults with councilmembers and casts her votes with the knowledge that everyone in San Luis Obispo County--not just the 5th District--is impacted by those votes. That would be the big change that Ellen Beraud would bring, and I cannot wait to embrace that change.

Re: “Stoking the fires of division

This is one of the more ludicrous of Mr. Fonzi's posts, of course. In his eight years in office, President Bush's name was cited as an inspiration for exactly zero acts of violence; in President Obama's eight years in office, exactly zero acts of violence were committed by those citing the President's words as inspiration. In Trump's brief tenure, however, 38 acts of violence--to date!--have been committed by those who claim inspiration from Trump's words and views. ANTIFA has killed no one; white supremacists, citing Trump's inspiration, have killed dozens. And what of DJT's "great accomplishments?" Soaring debt? Humiliation on the world's stage? An economy on the brink of recession, threatening to bring down the rest of the world's economy? Playing kissy-face with the same class of fascist dictators that my father (and Mr. Fonzi) fought to defeat? No, this is a lawless President, surrounded by adoring sycophants, simmering in a stew of corruption and anti-American bigotry, thumbing their noses at American greatness and stoking violence among the cult of personality that believes that Trump, uber alles, represents the forgotten voice of the defeated confederacy. You, of all people, having taken the blood oath of office to defend our Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic, should know this better than most; unfortunately, you too have been caught up in the MAGA vapor of resentment against those who, at their core, are more fundamentally American than you.

Re: “A terrible deal

What Mr. Fonzi failed to do, of course, is explain how any element of GND actually does all of these horrific things he fears. Yes, the corporate right wing, fueled (if you will) by lobbies for oil and gas, is in a blind panic about the GND, because it does propose an enormous reduction in government welfare for the corporations they represent, in lieu of supporting wind, solar and other renewable energy sources. The GND is ambitious--perhaps overly optimistic in its ambitions--but it is a blueprint, really, that would require legislative and budgetary actions to implement each of its elements. It's open for debate, but debate can occur only with an open mind--not one that is informed solely by inflammatory talking points and false narratives about the true science that underlies the urgency for change. Re: “Trickle down paranoia

Here's the other thing about Tommy Gong: It's likely that someone on his staff made that error, and Tommy just didn't catch it. Did he publicly state that a staff member screwed up? No, he didn't, because he's a class act from beginning to end.

Re: “Zeros

I worked with both Tommy Gong and Lynn Compton during my time with the County. One is a bright, dedicated public servant who cares about public service, good governance and getting it right. The other, of course, is Ms. Compton.
