Re: “Bingeable: Twin Peaks: The Return, 2017

"The best-case scenario is that it will direct them back to the original series, which still remains a far superior show."

You reckon, Chris? I didn't grow up with the original series, so it goes without saying I didn't watch it in the proper context that it required. But my idea of Lynch at the peak of his powers is Lost Highway, his relentlessly nasty and acid scud missile from 1997. Not 1990-era Twin Peaks.

I found the first two seasons to be pretty lightweight and spineless. I enjoyed the warmth and some of the quirks, but the relentless cornball cheesiness and hokey cherry-pie folksiness became very grating very quickly. Comfort food only satisfies for so long before you want to start throwing chillies into the mix.

I say give us something new, radical, and transcendent. Each to their own, of course, but I don't watch Lynch for cosiness or familiarity. I watch Lynch because I want to come away from the experience with my head floating 6 feet above my body (like the charred ghost in the jail cell).
