Those high school tennis courts are indeed open

In a recent letter to the editor, Maurice Gendron (“Morro Bay High tennis courts aren’t always open,” May 11) discussed the high school’s tennis courts not being open to the public. Unfortunately, Mr. Gendron did not contact the school or my office to find out whether the courts are open for public use. Had he called, he would have found out that indeed they are open for public use on the weekends and after school.

As for spring break when Mr. Gendron found the courts locked, a substitute custodian had unknowingly locked the courts after cleaning them; it was a mistake. The courts remain unlocked at night and on weekends for public use, just like the courts at San Luis Obispo High School. If anyone has a question regarding a school campus or district policy, please give the school or district a call and hopefully we can correct the mistake or clarify our policy.

We are also working on new windscreens for both of our high school tennis courts. We wanted to see where the parents and spectators would watch the matches prior to installing them.

The district appreciates the support we have received in passing Measure D, and we look forward to continuing to share our progress so that the community can see their money is being spent wisely. We also appreciate the public’s assistance in keeping an eye on our facilities during non-instructional times.
