I read a recent article regarding the architecture of the new SLO Art Center. I think this building should be as interesting outside as it is inside.
We have a chance to excite potential art enthusiasts and further the cultural atmosphere in San Luis Obispo. This building could stand as an inviting “sculpture” in downtown San Luis Obispo. When visitors walk down the street, I don’t want them to have to ask, “Where’s the SLO Art Center?” I want them to say, “That must be the SLO Art Center.”
The Getty Center in L.A. and San Francisco’s MOMA are examples of art housing art. My husband and I have visited the Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and many other wonderful art museums. Those buildings do not follow the architecture of their surroundings, but they do shout “art.” Many people visit these museums simply to experience the beautiful architecture.
We have returned to Bilbao several times to just hang out around the grounds of the Guggenheim and enjoy a city that has been revitalized because of the exciting architecture of the museum.
San Luis Obispo deserves a beautifully designed art center.
