Save the Printery

It is a measure of a city how well it protects and maintains its parks and historic buildings. Plans for renovation of the historic, beautiful Atascadero city hall are underway. The Sunken Gardens is a little gem in the middle of downtown. It is joyful to walk through the Lake Park any afternoon or evening and see people of all ages enjoying the lake and families with their children at the swings or picnicking.

Somehow the Printery has fallen through the cracks. I have attended the city council meetings for the last two years and every few months a citizen or citizens will get up and ask about accountability of the owner/developer of the Printery, a nationally registered historic place. There are concerns about windows continuing to be broken and the lack of interior protection.

At the last meeting, citizens again expressed concern and when the city staff was asked about progress with the owner in the preservation, there was a silence and then admission that the city staff had met with the developer/owner’s engineers last December and in January this year. No progress has been made yet. The Atascadero city website has a journal of the recent history of the Printery, but the entries/actions inexplicably end in August 2007.

Hard economic times are no excuse for abandoning the criteria for maintaining this historic building. I am hopeful that the Atascadero city manager will take the lead in rectifying the problems with the preservation of the Atascadero Printery.
