Not funny, Hodin

Santa Maria

I spent more than 51 years as a truck operator, driving by Santa Margarita Elementary School on numerous occasions, and have crossed the railroad tracks and school zone along Highway 58 more times than I can count. I have an impeccable safety record and, like all truck operators today, was required to pass safety tests multiple times each year.
The April 25 cartoon portrayal of the Las Pilitas Resources proposal in Santa Margarita was offensive to truck operators across our community, especially those who are parents. Many operators, me included, have families of our own, and we’re all cognizant of the need to put the safety of children and seniors first. The next time you’re on the road, look around; you’ll likely notice trucks are usually the safest vehicles on the road in school zones: following posted speed limits, remaining aware of their surroundings, and paying particular attention to pedestrians, especially children. Trucks haul by schools daily, and their safety record is much better than cars in those areas.
The cartoon depiction recently published by your paper was in extremely poor taste, showed ignorance of the facts, and certainly wasn’t funny. All those in my profession prefer the facts, not false depictions.
