How to eat your companions

Nipomo

Regarding the April 4 cover story, “This little piggy was controversial”:

For decades, I have raised pigs for companionship and the meat, which is so much better than store-bought. The pig pen is substantial, so pigs do not get out. They like being talked to and their bellies rubbed. They are very intelligent, friendly companions and love waste food.

At about 200 pounds, they go in the freezer.

Friends often ask, “How can you eat a pet you’ve named and talked to daily?” My answer: with a knife and fork.
