Bring in leaders who think water

Paso Robles

I was surprised—pleasantly—at the expose the Tribune did on our water problems (“Wine and Water”).

Better late than never.

It was interesting to read how some local politicians claim now that they did not know that the water shortage was coming, that they made a mistake. They remind me of the government economists who said they couldn’t foresee the economic collapse of 2008.

It was obvious to many, however, that both the economic bubble and the local groundwater, supporting continuous growth, would not and could not last forever.

It might not be so bad if all that agricultural water were used growing organic food crops. Instead, we are surrounded by a growing number of wine industry vineyards. Is this the best way for a society to use a now-precious resource?

These kinds of water problems are occurring all over the state. Water isn’t the only problem. The state’s biocapacity is now about one global hectare per person (gha/per). Our ecological footprint, however, is about 4.3 gha/per. We will soon be short of a lot of resources, and our children and our children’s children will pay a heavy price for this.

To avoid worsening effects will require us to replace our now counterproductive, ecologically destructive growth economy and consumer culture with a new 21st century lifestyle. Voters will need to select leaders with the vision and courage to do this, and not reelect the same or similar politicians who allowed this mess to occur in the first place.
