NEW TIMES When did you start hosting the Bob Marley Tribute?

OLIVER We started 11 years ago as a means to pay tribute and celebrate his birthday, which is on Feb. 6. My husband knew Bob Marley personally and wanted to help continue Bob Marley’s teaching, music, and the spirit of Jamaica and Rastafarian culture.

NEW TIMES What was it about Bob Marley that made him so iconic?

OLIVER Bob Marley took the voice of his homeland—its struggles, victories, and loves—and put them into a context that everyone can relate to and appreciate. His passion for life and sharing the wisdom in its entire splendor brought forth a worldwide acknowledgement of the Rastafarian movement and reggae music. Bob Marley was able to encourage others to speak out against the terrors of man and fight for the rights that all humans deserve to have.

NEW TIMES Where will this be taking place?

OLIVER We’ll be hosting the event at our store’s location from Feb. 3 to the 6th. We will be featuring Bob Marley art and official merchandise, as well as music provided by Ras Danny, who performed with Bob Marley. Thursday Ras Danny and the Reggae All-Star Band will be performing at SLO Brew, as well as DJ Katchafiya. The tickets for that night’s performance will be $8 preshow and $10 at the door, and all the proceeds will benefit the “Trenchtown Culture Yard and Library,” a charity near and dear to Bob Marley.
