Semesters totally whack, says Poly task force

Cal Poly released its Semester Review Task Force’s recommendation on Dec. 11. Members advised against converting the college calendar from the quarter system.

“Although there are merits to the semester calendar, the cost, stress, and negative impacts of conversion outweigh the merits,” the 135-page report said.

The task force estimated that a conversion would cost somewhere between $18.15 million and $21.23 million over the next seven to 11 years. Even if the funds were available, they could be better used elsewhere, according to the task force.

Still, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong announced that open forums on the matter will be held Jan. 24 and 30 at the Performing Arts Center Pavilion to help in his deliberations with the California University System, who will ultimately decide.
