Pismo police chief will retire this summer 

Capping a law enforcement career that’s spanned four decades, Pismo Beach Police Chief Jeffrey Norton announced on Feb. 18 that he will retire, effective July 29.

Norton, 53, began his career in 1983 with the Grover Beach Police Department. After transferring to Pismo Beach in 1992 as a sergeant, Norton was promoted to commander in 2002, and to police chief in January 2009.

“I love this job, and I’m going to miss everyone I work with dearly, but it’s the right time to retire—for me and my family,” Norton told New Times. “I’m very thankful for all the support I’ve received.”

During his time in law enforcement, Norton served as a field-training officer, detective, administrative sergeant, and SWAT commander. He’s also been an instructor at the Allan Hancock College Police Academy in Santa Maria for more than 20 years.

“It’s a bittersweet moment for our community, but it’s the right decision for Jeff,” said Pismo Beach City Manager Jim Lewis. “He has been a real leader for Pismo Beach, a mentor for me, and he will definitely be missed.”

Lewis told New Times the city is looking at a “variety of options” to fill Norton’s position at the moment, and will be making an announcement about their plans in the next week or two.
