Athletes have coaches to help improve their game. Performers have coaches to make the most of their god-given talents. We coach women through childbirth and teenagers through their SAT’s. We even coach coaches to coach. But when it comes to life, the greatest challenge of them all, it sometimes seems as if we’re on our own. Well, we’re not. There are “life coaches available, too, trained professionals dedicated to giving others that helping hand, that encouragement, maybe even that extra push they need to excel at the game of life. Lee Nelson, a Certified Professional Coach based in Los Osos, is one such coach whose life’s passion is, well, making life work—for everybody.

- Personal trainer Recognizing your goals and realizing your true potential are two essential keys to life-long fulfillment. Certified life coach Lee Nelson specializes in helping people unleash the dreams that make life a satisfying reality.
# Nelson’s interest in life coaching came out of years as a leadership developer for corporate executives. She worked one-on-one with people as they moved through promotions into greater, more demanding positions within their companies. Their transitions were smooth and successful because they had the extra support they needed to take on the new challenges they faced. After receiving her Professional Coach certification in 1998, she founded LifeWorks!, a program that focuses on guiding everyday people through their life’s sometimes extraordinary transitions.
These days it’s not uncommon for a person to go through three, maybe even four career changes in a lifetime. People are living longer and they want their lives to have greater meaning. Sooner or later we’ll all ask ourselves the question, “What do I do now? Nelson leads her clients to the solution by first getting them to answer the question, “What do I want now?
With Nelson’s assistance, clients learn to identify carefully their goals and the obstacles that stand in their way. Like a coach helping a batter improve his swing, she provides the structure and guidelines they need to put their unique talents to practical use. With regular communication through phone calls and emails, she tracks their progress over the months, or even years, and eventually they find themselves with real tools for making life really and truly enjoyable.Â
Understand this: coaching is not therapy. Nelson is adamant about making that distinction, and warns that people who have not taken the initial steps to understand the root of their dissatisfaction or personal fears will have a difficult time getting through the LifeWorks! process.
“I am a huge advocate of people examining their lives, she says. “But this is about taking action, now and everyday, so that they can live better, more fulfilling lives. It’s about learning to be all that you can be. As tough as it might seem, it’s really that simple.
Nelson offers a free sample session for prospective clients who want to get the feel of exactly what a life coach can do for them. “It’s a selection process that goes both ways, she says. If it’s a good match, then the first step has been taken to getting on the right track and heading down the road to self-satisfaction. “I do this because I know how difficult change is on your own, says Nelson, explaining her passion for life coaching. “And we have this one, beautiful life to live. Why not make the most of it? Yeah, coach, why not?
