Marketing Manager, United Blood Services

NEW TIMES: Are you guys secretly vampires?

NICHOLS: No, but we do appreciate healthy blood.

NEW TIMES: What blood types are most needed right now?

NICHOLS: All blood types, but 0- and A-

NEW TIMES: Are there any upcoming events we should know about?

NICHOLS: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the day of service. What better way to serve than donate blood? We’re open the Sunday before from 8 a.m. to 1p.m.

NEW TIMES: How can someone volunteer?

NICHOLS: Host a blood drive. If a business is able to get 30 or more available donators, give us a call. Better yet, make an appointment and bring your family.

NEW TIMES: Are most people surprised at how easy it is to donate?

NICHOLS: I think so. Everybody says they’re afraid of needles, but it’s no worse than a bee sting, and it goes away in minutes. It’s mild in the scheme of things.

NEW TIMES: How often do people faint?

NICHOLS: Rarely. We make sure you’re healthy and have a fun experience.

NEW TIMES: What are the criteria?

NICHOLS: You have to weigh at least 110 pounds. You can donate at age 16 with parent approval, or 17 otherwise. Eat well before donating, drink lots of water, and you’ll be fine.
