Hoving recognition comes late 

Gary Hoving has been gone from the Sheriff’s Department since June, but on Nov. 18 he will be recognized for his 29 years of service, some of which is on tape.

Hoving left the department after learning his office had been bugged by Sheriff Patrick Hedges and Undersheriff Steve Bolts. He sued Hedges, Bolts, and the county in October 2007 and was recently awarded a $660,000 settlement.

Next week, Hoving will be formally recognized for his county service, although it may only be on paper. When most SLO County employees retire they are presented with a commemorative resolution, praise from their supervisors, and a photo or two. The items are typically held in the presentations portion of the board’s agenda.

Hoving’s presentation, however, is one of 35 consent agenda items. There will be no discussion unless a county supervisor or member of the public specifically pulls the item.
