Giants sign Mustangs' Chase Johnson

Chase Johnson, a relief-pitcher for the Cal Poly Mustangs baseball team, was among five Cal Poly players this year to sign with a professional baseball team in this year’s 2013 draft. The San Francisco Giants shopped local this year, selecting Johnson as their third pick—making him the 101st pick overall.

Standing 6-foot-3, the tall right-handed flamethrower possesses a fastball that ranges in the low-mid 90s, but can also reach up to 97 mph. Johnson may not have pitched a whole lot this year, but in 23 1/3 innings, he posted a 2.31 ERA with 21 strikeouts.

After finishing finals and his junior year at Poly just last week, Johnson will receive a $440,000 signing bonus from the Giants, who believe Johnson could become a solid setup-type reliever or even a starter, according to a report from Jim Callis, executive editor of Baseball America.

The signing comes at a good time especially for a Cal Poly student, with five alumni making their MLB debuts within the last five years.

Other Mustangs to sign in this year’s draft include Joey Wagman (SP, Round 17), Jimmy Allen (INF, Round 23), Michael Holback (RP, Round 25), Denver Chavez (2B, Round 30), and closer Reed Reilly (RP, Round 18).
