Fast facts

A local nonprofit organization, Enhancement Inc., has organized the first Creative Healing Retreat for Breast Cancer Survivors. The retreat will be limited to 20 survivors from San Luis Obispo County and will take place at the Inn at Morro Bay from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. The purpose of the weekend retreat is to provide breast-cancer survivors with coping skills that will improve their quality of life.

The retreat will focus on art as a tool for healing. Joan Ruggles, a retired Cal Poly art professor and breast-cancer survivor, will lead collage classes. Local writer and teacher Pam McCully will lead journaling sessions, and KCBX radio personality Marisa Wadell will lead percussion and music sessions. Master yoga teacher and Enhancement Inc. Executive Director Shoosh Crotzer will lead yoga classes.

Retreat participants will also learn more about how to prevent, diagnose, and manage lymphedema and how to exercise and use successful therapeutic techniques.

Participation costs $475, but partial or full scholarships may be available thanks to a $2,500 donation from the Board of Supervisors and a $1,500 contribution from Sierra Vista Hospital. For more information about the retreat or to obtain an application, visit or e-mail [email protected]. The application deadline is August 15.
