On July 14, Jack's Helping Hand, a local nonprofit providing help to children with special needs, is having a barbecue fundraiser. The money raised will buy a prosthetic leg for Owen Back, a 19-year-old who lost his leg to bone cancer. The event will be at Santa Margarita Ranch and begins at 4:30 p.m. Festivities include train rides, live and silent auctions, wine, food, and live entertainment by Paul Brown and the Sugar Daddy Swing Kings. Tickets are available for $50 each by calling 547-1914. Part of the ticket price is tax-deductible.
The Central Coast Roller Derby will host Operation Black and Blue, a free, all-girl roller derby game at Santa Rosa Park, on July 22 at 4 p.m. The Rookies of CCRD will battle the Ventura County Derby Darlins while fundraising for the de Groot Nursing Home for Children of San Luis Obispo County. They're hoping to collect 200 bottles of baby powder and tubes of Desitin. With each bottle or tube donated, a raffle ticket is given to win prizes such as wine tours, concert tickets, gift baskets, and more. Downtown Brewing Company will be barbecuing, so bring your lawn chairs.
