NEW TIMES: Do you need of volunteers?
PERRYESS: We’re always short handed—to walk dogs, keep cats company, and help socialize animals.
NEW TIMES: How often do you rescue animals?
PERRYESS: We’re obligated to take in all stray animals, though you can drop off unwanted animals for a small free.
NEW TIMES: Why do animals arrive at the shelter?
PERRYESS: Strays that aren’t licensed by their owners; only one third are redeemed.
NEW TIMES: How can people help if they’re not able to volunteer?
PERRYESS: If you own a pet, get it licensed, spayed, and neutered.
NEW TIMES: As a
volunteer, is it hard to avoid adopting animals?
PERRYESS: Volunteers have the option to foster animals and find them a home.
NEW TIMES: What are the most unusual animals the shelter has encountered?
PERRYESS: Emu’s, pot belly pigs, a variety of snakes, birds, hamsters, rats; a Chameleon once.
NEW TIMES: Do volunteers need training?
PERRYESS: We hold training sessions every other Saturday. Call 781-4413 if you’re interested.
