NEW TIMES: Does Hot Shots offer any pool tournaments?
SCHWENT: No, we don’t hold any tournaments because of liability issues. However, we do have a league that uses our facility. They’ll show up on Tuesdays from September to February or March.
NEW TIMES: Tell us about your building.
SCHWENT: The old theatre we’re in was originally opened in 1927 and started with silent films. This theatre showed such classics as Gone with the Wind and Rocky Horror Picture Show. From 1938 to 1988, it was a huge music venue. Tons of local and big-name musicians played here. In 1994 we converted it to Hot Shots and left the building’s charm intact as much as possible.
NEW TIMES: What specials do you offer?
SCHWENT: During the offseason we provide excellent deals all day and night. Typically, the offseason is from October 1 to April 1, Sunday through Thursday. Sundays we offer half off all beers, and Wednesdays are our ladies’ nights.
NEW TIMES: What entertainment does Hot Shots offer other than pool?
SCHWENT: I would say that our customer base consists of people who come in for our food. Families really appreciate the safe, fun, and friendly atmosphere. Our motto is Eat, Drink, and Play.
