Let’s face it, balancing work and school can be very hard. If you don’t go to work enough, then paying for school becomes difficult. But contrariwise, if work gets in the way of school, then progressing academically is going to be difficult. It therefore pleases me to announce to the hoi polloi of fair Cuesta College that, contrary to what some have apparently heard, Cuesta’s Work Experience Program has not been cut!
For the uninitiated masses, Cuesta’s on-the-job Work Experience courses, WEXP 151L and 252L, allow Cuesta students to earn course credits without attending weekly classes. By gaining more experience in the workplace, and applying what they learn in the classroom to knowledge with skills developed in the workplace, the student grows as worker, student, and person. Many additional benefits from the program have been reported by students, such as promotions and better communication in the workplace. Participants must have either a paid or unpaid position (that includes internships … heheh … now just why would I mention that?). If you would like help finding one for the program, you should check out the Cuesta Career Connection part of its website, or the online job database at cuesta-csm.symplicity.com. For more information, the Cuesta website has a WEXP section, or students may contact the Work Experience Coordinator at 546-3204. Students will need to visit an orientation class and receive an add code. Don’t let those .5 to 3.5 units get away from you!
Now for those of you already torn and ragged from the sandpaper embrace of the working world, it might do you good to spend an evening of mutual understanding with Woody Guthrie. “Hard Travelin’ with Woody,” an event written and performed by Randy Noojin, who steps in place of the hardened folk singer, will take place in the Cuesta CPAC on Feb. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $12, and parking is free provided that one parks in Lot 2. The performance, a glimpse into the spirit of a folk singer rallying for striking laborers, is benefiting Cuesta’s Drama Department as a fundraiser. You may buy tickets at the door, or online, which will allow you to not have to wait at the box office. For more information about the show itself, visit hardtravelinshow.com.
