You there! Yeah, you! Cuesta student! Put the paper down! I’m watching you. You’ve got just days left until finals, time that you should spend studying—and possibly weeping uncontrollably.

You have neither the time nor the opportunity to listen to me tell you about the Rhapsody in Blue Cuesta Night Band Concert with Inga Swearingen on Monday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. You should not be worrying about the immense talent that the event is full of, nor reminiscing even for a moment on the skill of your college’s various jazz groups. Don’t suddenly remember that Inga Swearingen has been New Times Music Awards-certified. And for heaven’s sake, don’t open your wallet to see if you can afford the $7 ticket price for you, a senior citizen, or a Jazz Federation member—or, for that matter, the $10 it would cost anyone else. We don’t have time for these shenanigans, I mean really. Otherwise you might be alerted that parking is now free for Cuesta Performing Arts events (yes!), and that you can reserve your tickets at 546-3198. So seriously, student. PUT THE PAPER DOWN.

Oh, hello there, dear Polytechnic pupil! How long have you been here? I was just finishing up something else, so step on in. I have some good news for you: Your education is in good hands. If it wasn’t, would a Cal Poly speech communication alumnus be named the 62nd National Teacher of the Year? Rebecca Mieliwocki, seventh-grade Burbank English teacher, received this honor among the other 2012 State Teachers of the Year. President Obama himself led the ceremony, which added to Mieliwocki’s two other wins (at least) for education.

In other news, Poly’s men’s tennis team opens the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship in Berkeley against Texas Tech on May 11 or 12. By winning the Big West Conference Tournament and posting a 15-7 overall record, the Mustangs made it to the championship. The team is currently ranked 63rd in the latest ITA poll, and Texas Tech is currently ranked 19th. Poly also became the third men’s tennis team in conference history to finish undefeated when it finished the Big West regular season 5-0. Go ‘Stangs!

You may also want to hear about a free event. On Thursday, May 10, at 7:30 pm at San Luis Obispo’s Methodist Church (1515 Fredrick St.), you can enjoy “An Evening of Woodwind Chamber Music.” Hear traditional and contemporary offerings for the musical palate, performed by woodwind quintets, flute choir, a saxophone quartet, a saxophone ensemble, and a clarinet ensemble. Don’t think I’m full of hot air if I tell you that the event will be immensely enjoyable.

As always, Mustangs, keep calm on midterms. School is nothing to lose your cool about.
