Cougars & Mustangs

Dear prospective Cal Poly students,

Our enormous, past Mardi Gras celebrations may have been prohibited (as if prohibition and San Luis Obispo could ever be used in the same sentence), but we Central Coasters and our student population still know how to party! Aww yeah, man, let’s go wild and crazy tonight—I’m thinking we can go to Farmers Market and ... wait for it ... buy produce! All the other towns be jealous of the nightlife available to people younger than 21.

OK, but seriously, all kidding aside, Cal Poly’s Open House looks pretty freaking awesome. And it helps to showcase how great an experience attending Cal Poly can be! Did you know that the school boasts more than 300 clubs? You’ve got your Astronomical Society, your Whovians (Dr. Who fans), your Swing Club, your Pharmacy Club. And if so desired, you can always start your own! It’s a fallacy to say that all students do here is drink. You can begin the Open House extravaganza at Farmers Market from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 18 by meeting students from various clubs and organizations from the school. Our market may be pretty famous, but it’s worth letting the uninitiated know that it can be found at the corner of Higuera and Broad streets in our very own downtown.

The following day, Friday, April 19, is when the real fun begins. In fact, there’s so much stuff going on, I can’t talk about all of it in this column. At the sidewalk outside the Campus Market, for example, you’ve got student-made lunch and refreshments from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All throughout the day the university’s various colleges will be having their prospective welcomes. There’s even a rodeo from 6 to 9 p.m.! And it might just be worth checking out our fabulous Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. for the Music Department Concert (tickets costing $12 and $19 for the public, and $9 and $12 for senior citizens and students)!

Saturday, April 20, is also full of excitement, with the Poly Royal Parade from 9 to 9:45 a.m., campus tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Cal Poly Equestrian Team Showcase from noon to 1 p.m., and a lot more.

Sunday, April 21, boasts the All-State Music Festival Concert at 2:30 p.m. in Harman Hall at the PAC, full of great performers from across California. Baseball games will be on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

For more information on all of this, such as even more events (I believe there’s a robot competition tucked away somewhere), visit at your earliest convenience. If you end up choosing Cal Poly, you can check back here every week for more student-related shenanigans. So for now, have fun—and congrats on taking this important step forward in your life.
