The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is getting a new undersheriff.
Chief Deputy Martin J. Basti, 59, a 32-year veteran of the department, will be sworn in Jan. 3 directly after the new sheriff, Ian Parkinson, takes the oath at noon, according to a department news release. Basti is currently custody/court services chief and will keep that job. His term as undersheriff will last one year. His old position as chief deputy will remain vacant as a cost-cutting measure.
The undersheriff serves as the second in command of the department. Basti will be stepping into the vacancy left by Steve Bolts, who left the department after being arrested for drunk driving. Charges in the case were eventually dropped.
