ASH offender found

John Howard Hardacre, a convicted child molester, was found in Bakersfield after he was released last week from SLO County jail. The unknown location of Hardacre caused a stir, even though he had until July 7 to register as a sex offender with local authorities.

Hardacre, 52, has been convicted of three sex crimes against children since the '70s. In 1998, he was committed to ASH as a sexually violent predator. There he was convicted of a felony for attacking employees, but the conviction was recently overturned. Hardacre was released from prison last week after the new trial because of his time served.

Because his sexual predator status had expired, Hardacre was not returned to ASH. He went to Bakersfield and checked into the Bakersfield Rescue Mission, but because he arrived late in the day he was not able to register with authorities.

As of press time the state Megan's Law web site showed he had registered with local authorities. Hardacre has been listed as "transient."
