With the variety of savory and sweet foods found on most Thanksgiving tables, you need a wine that’s versatile. That’s why I recommend opening this food friendly Rhone blend of syrah, grenache noir, mourvedre, and counoise, that’s affordable for most budgets. The Patelin, French for “country neighborhood,” offers the meaty flavors red wine lovers prefer. But it has the zesty fruit flavors of grenache to keep it friendly even when you add cranberry sauce to your turkey. It’s available at the Paso tasting room for $20 retail, and for wine club members it’s only $14.

One of my favorite Paso viogniers, this newly released white is a flavorful complement with many meals (but not spicy-hot foods). Winemaker Jeff Pipes said of the harvest, “We picked dangerously late to accentuate our intensely-perfumed, exotic tropical fruit flavors.” I found it very pretty and easy drinking whether alone or at the table. It offers tasty notes of pear nicely offset by flavors of citrus, flowers, and subtle spices. It’s as appropriate for the Thanksgiving table as it is for duck breast with lavender, or a main dish salad with poultry and dried fruits. Available at the Paso tasting room, it’s $28 retail.
