Poolside white wine spritzers have met their match! This crisp refreshment is here to cool your jets, whether you’re hanging by the Elks Lodge pool or on the beach on a perfect Avila afternoon. SLO winemaker Stephen Ross is originally from Minnesota, where he experimented in the family basement with rhubarb and apple wines. Can I just say I’m glad he finally graduated to elegant wines like this pretty pinot gris? The idea of a chilled “rhubarb spritzer” is just slightly less refreshing ... .
• Stephen Ross’ 2014 Pinot Gris—$20; 187 Suburban Road, SLO.
If you’ve got fresh basil, flaunt it! That’s my motto anyway. When I’m not throwing fistfuls of the tender leaves onto sandwiches and pesto sauces, I’m drinking it with a little help from Sidecar, where mixology and magic collide! The naked fox is like a breath of fresh spring air: house-infused basil vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup, grapefruit beer, and ice combine to create a dreamy, herbaceous blend that melts away any trace of post-work stress. Try it during happy hour—when all cocktails are $7—for an extra dose of backyard bliss.
• Sidecar’s Naked Fox—About $11; 1127 Broad St., SLO.
Hayley Thomas is also a fan of rosemary and lemon sage. Got a fun new cocktail to try? Share the recipe and email [email protected].
