Festive

Get crafty: DIY make-ahead Halloween snacks that won't make your lil' devils and princesses groan? Brilliant! Make classic candy apples (poke apples with cinnamon stick handles and dip into heated candy coating or caramel) or craft classic popcorn ball "skulls" complete with candy corn fangs and malt ball eyes. Don't underestimate how cheap and creative you can get on this spookiest of holidays (for tips, Pinterest cannot be beat) ... It's pumpkin picking time across the region! Get your hands on fresh pumpkins, squash, corn, and other fall veggies at Chesebrough Farm this month. Pick up a few orange orbs for your front porch as well as some seasonal goodness to work into soups, sides, and pies! Plus, who doesn't love a cute photo op (790 Moss Lane, Templeton; for more information go to www.chesebroughfarm.com)?

Fresh!

Morro Bay's Libertine Pub opened their second location on Broad Street in downtown SLO in August, and they're doing amazing things with their wild sour ales (see this week's Hayley's Picks for all the love and a few good recommendations) ... There's a new sushi joint in Los Osos causing quite a stir. Owned by Sylvester's Burger restaurateur Brian Englund, Kuma Sushi serves up rolls, ramen, and a long list of sake options (2011 10th St., Los Osos; for more information, call 528-6767) ... Have you tried the goodies at Just Baked SLO in Santa Margarita? The sustainably made baked goods are available out of their storefront located in the same building as the Ancient Peaks tasting room, and they are all about creating unique treats for weddings, parties, or just because (for more information, go to justbakedslo.com).

Did you hear?

The Downtown SLO Farmers' Market has already undergone a revamp, but organizers are setting their sights on even bigger changes ahead. A new vision plan includes easing market congestion, free public Wi-Fi, and beer and wine tasting! This gives a whole new meaning to "local flavor" ... Baywood will celebrate its 37th Oktoberfest Car Show by the Bay this Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Head down to 2nd Street and chow down on a pancake breakfast, take part in a 4-mile run, and view a range of shiny classic cars. Beer from Fig Mountain, BarrelHouse, Telegraph, Hanger 24, Tap It, and M Special will come together with Bristols Hard Cider for an action packed day of fun!
