So, this could turn out brilliantly, or it could be a complete and utter disaster: I’m taking over this event called Art After Art After Dark. Typographical error? Nope, this repetitive but charming mouthful is the actual name of a dubious monthly after-hours art happening hosted by the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.

Formerly led by Cuesta art student Brigham Baker, AAAAD is basically a younger, more spontaneous Art After Dark. Following on the heels of that venerable institution like a lost little sister, AAAAD kicks off around 9 p.m. as the last Art After Dark patrons are downing their wines, and making their way out onto San Luis Obispo’s mean streets.

With Baker at the helm, previous happenings have taken the form of a love-letter reading, a DIY fashion show, and an open discussion forum between graffiti artists and local police.

The theme of next month’s Art After Art After Dark, going down the first Friday in February, is “Word of Mouth.” I can’t give away all of the details. But current plans include x-rays, the mind-blowing musical stylings of a top-secret local band, an exhibit of original artwork with a dental and/or typographical flair, and a multimedia reading of rejection letters—so if you have a good rejection letter, please bring it along. We’d love to hear it.

The “Word of Mouth” theme was inspired by my friend Dustin Garrison, Cal Poly grad and local boy of 10 years. Immediately after relocating to Portland, Garrison, 28, was in a gnarly bike accident that knocked out several front teeth—leaving him with a gap in his smile and a pile of bills he couldn’t hope to pay. So while AAAAD usually takes donations for the museum, proceeds garnered from February’s event will help Garrison pay his dentist.

“Word of Mouth,” the upcoming Art After Art after Dark happening, takes place in the San Luis Obispo Art Museum on Feb. 4, from 9 to 11 p.m. The Art Museum is located at 1010 Broad St. in downtown SLO. The event is free, though donations are appreciated.
