A mural for the public

If there is one thing that could always use freshening up, it’s a public restroom. Enter, Cayucos Beautiful and the Cayucos Art Association. These organizations have teamed up to create a colorful and location-appropriate mural on the restroom wall located at the base ofthe CayucosPier. This enormous blank canvas will be transformed by copper pipe, mosaic tile, and artist’s paintings, showcasing ocean scenes; underwater sea life swimming and swaying amid the currents, with the radiant sun beating down, the bright blue sky above, with seagulls stretching their wings in flight.

For months now, a team of artists and administrators have been working around the clock to create this landmark for people who visit the Cayucos Beach and Pier.

Dorothy Fones, representative of Cayucos Beautiful and Co - Project Director, is responsible for financing and is working side by side with DeLayna Luffee (CAA president) throughout the mural project.

Luffee states, “Lots of hard work and many tears [took place] along the way.Perseverance, faith and good people helped a lot [with the installation of the mural].

But before the creative stuff could take place, wall prep director, Ken Kaberline, filled cracks with mortar for a smoother wall surface.

Starting in August, Bruce Beck, metal sculptor and certified welder, will bolt the copper pipeonto the wall in curve designs accenting the waves.

The painters will start the first week of September, what is sure to be a lively, fun design

Peter Ladochy, mosiac tile expert, has directed and trainedteam of artists todesign the mosaic tile subjects: seagulls, sun, fish, and more.

Stop by to see the process on the mural, as on September 1, the painting crew will begin. Each artisan is a volunteer.

The Cayucos Art Association meets at the foot of the Cayucos Pier at the Cayucos Veterans Hall at 7pm.Info: 995-2049.
