Undersheriff bolts early

BY ROBERT A. MCDONALD

San Luis Obispo County Undersheriff Steve Bolts, second in command in the county Sheriff’s Department and an accused drunk driver, is retiring early.

Originally slated to retire in December, Bolts moved up his retirement date to Sept. 17 because “he had things to do with his family” said Rob Bryn, Sheriff’s Department spokesman. Bryn said Sheriff Pat Hedges and Bolts talked the matter over and mutually agreed Sept. 17 would be his final day.

Bolts has pleaded not guilty to charges that he was driving under the influence, stemming from an incident on June 5.

Atascadero police officers arrested Bolts after receiving an anonymous call that the undersheriff had been drinking at a party earlier that night and was driving with two children in his truck. Police didn’t find any kids, but they did arrest Bolts for DUI after he failed a field sobriety test. Bolts submitted to a blood test after his arrest and tested slightly above the legal limit of .08 percent.

Bolt’s case is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on Sept. 20.
