Here at New Times, we’d love to cover every San Luis Obispo County race in great detail, but that’s not always possible given space and staffing constraints.
That being said, we still wanted to give recognition to candidates and races we didn’t get the chance to cover in our Nov. 6 print issue. Here, in annotated form, are some other races you should be aware of.
Morro Bay: The only local item on the Nov. 4 ballot was Measure J, which sought to change the city’s election system from its current dual form to a single election in November. The measure was a resounding success, drawing 76.38 percent of voters (2,464 votes) into the “yes” camp, with only 23.62 percent (762 votes) in the “no” camp as of press time on Nov. 5.
Los Osos: As of press time on Nov. 5, Jon-Erik Storm (20.35 percent), Louis Tornatzky (18.17 percent), and Chuck Cesena (15.75 percent) were leading the race for three open seats on the Los Osos Community Services District Board of Directors.
Templeton: Wayne Peterson (29.92 percent) and Gwen Pelfrey (27.12 percent) were the top two vote getters for two open seats on the Templeton CSD Board of Directors as of Nov. 5.
Oceano: As of Nov. 5, incumbent Jennifer Blackburn (52.14 percent) had easily cruised to a victory, retaining her seat on the Oceano CSD Board of Directors. Ousted OCSD General Manager Lonnie Curtis (25.3 percent) was a distant second, with Michael Ebinger (21.03 percent) bringing up the rear.
Port San Luis Harbor District: Incumbent Drew Brandy (32.38 percent) and Mary Matakovich (27.30 percent) were the front-runners and likely winners of two open seats on the Harbor Commission as of Nov. 5.
Atascadero: On top of the city’s Measures F and E regarding a half-percent sales tax—both of which passed—Measure B appeared likely to pass as of press time on Nov. 5. Measure B is a $58 million bond measure that seeks to improve the city’s schools. As of Nov. 5, the measure (which needs 55 percent plus one to pass) had 60.79 percent in the “yes” camp and 39.21 percent in the “no” camp.
Clerk-Recorder: Even the fine folks who count all our votes were up for election this year. As of press time on Nov. 5, Assistant Clerk-Recorder Tommy Gong (62.55 percent) had beat out Deputy Clerk-Recorder Amanda King (37.27 percent) to be the SLO County’s next Clerk-Recorder, succeeding longtime officeholder Julie Rodewald.
