And now, my rebuttalSan Luis Obispo
Ken Goodman’s letter, “We need to avoid economic disaster” (Oct. 4), has various misstatements requiring rebuttal.
Goodman writes, “[Michael] Sullivan says, ‘Page claims that President Obama accomplished nothing in his first term.’ Page never said that!” Actually, Otis Page did say that (Sept. 13) when he wrote, “President Obama’s speech at the DNC was filled with goals embraced in rhetoric of hope reminiscent of the statements and promises he made four years ago. Why didn’t he accomplish them during the first four years ... ?”
Goodman argues, “Sullivan contradicts his main point that both Obama and Romney gave ‘general statements’ at their party conventions. He proceeds to specifically attack what he holds to be Romney’s version to improve the economy.” That thesis is incorrect. The “main point” is that in the convention speech, both candidates gave general information lacking in clear, explicit detail of their economic plans. Romney’s economic plan should have some scrutiny of the details, which Romney did not provide in the convention speech (or in the first debate). That scrutiny is what I provided.
The plan I scrutinized was not “my version” of Romney’s plan—it is the five-point plan that had been on Romney’s website before and after the convention. Romney’s “voodoo economics” plan says we can simultaneously reduce income taxes for everybody, avoid the removal of middle-class tax deductions, strengthen educational spending, assure that Medicare and Social Security remain solvent, continue fighting unnecessary and very expensive wars, and significantly cut the deficit.
No reasonable person is buying that.
