No thanks, RomneySan Luis Obispo
By Michael Sullivan
Well, as Ronald Reagan would say, “Otis Page, there you go again.” (“No thanks, Obama,” Sept. 13).
Page claims that President Obama accomplished nothing in his first term. Then why do extremists like Mitt Romney (and Page) want to tear down the Affordable Care Act and replace it with some unknown plan (probably with higher individual costs and fewer benefits), to be revealed only after the election?
In both party convention speeches, Romney and Obama gave general statements, long on emotion and short on specifics, both candidates using essentially the same formula.
I have studied what little is known about the way Romney wants to improve the economy with his version of “vulture capitalism.” His plan calls for energy independence, education reform, deficit reduction, help for small business, and freer trade. Sounds good, right? But in reality, Romney’s plan sucks.
“Energy independence” under Romney means he would roll back EPA emission rules on coal-fired power plants, and he would cut federal subsidies to develop renewable energy, such as wind power. “Education reform” means less federal aid to schools and more money for school vouchers, which wouldn’t help most poor families. ”Deficit reduction” means more wars and continued wasteful spending on the military, cuts in just about everything else, tax breaks for the wealthy, and loss of some income tax deductions for the middle class. “Help for small business” apparently means the rollback of environmental protection and safety laws. “Freer trade” probably means even more American jobs would be “out-sourced” to other countries.
