This is not how I think a democracy works 

I see that there are some among us who agree with the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court that money is speech and money can, and should, talk. Sue Luft and Jerry Reaugh maintain that “those who will pay the most should have a say in the governance of the district commensurate with their financial contribution” (“Balance the basin,” May 1). So the 1 percent in this country, state, and county (assuming, of course, they actually pay their taxes) should have a larger voice than the rest of us because they pay more? Somehow, that’s not what I understood to be democratic.

Although I’m not part of the basin, I shudder to think what kind of a precedent this will set for other areas that may face similar crises in the future. I urge a “no” vote on AB 2453.
