What’s the best thing Atascadero has going for it?

A semi-rural charm and the privacy, big lots, and oak trees galore.
The downtown core’s historic nature, if the city ever figures out what to do with its untapped potential.
The Walmart, because that’s one shopping option I must have.

Earth and perspective

By Robert Pavlik - San Luis Obispo

Many thanks for Glen Starkey’s article about our tiny blue marble and Earth Day 2014 (“Our tiny blue marble … ,” April 24).

More than 45 years ago, in December 1968, three men went to work in a small steel capsule. They were catapulted beyond our earthly bonds and sailed through the quiet eternal night.

The trio circled a barren, pockmarked boulder. Emerging on the sunny side, there was their smooth, blue home shining in a flat black sky.

While they recorded the image, they read from the Book of Genesis, delivered a Christmas greeting, and fell silent. For a moment, the world joined them, and we all shared the awe of our collective humanity and our own precious, too brief place in space.
