New Times / Breaking News StoryFremont Theater to close tonightBY NEW TIMES STAFFThe iconic Fremont Theater in downtown San Luis Obispo announced on its Facebook page Jan. 31 that it would be closing the doors to its main theater later that night. The assistant manager on duty told New Times that the theater’s final showing would be the 7:30 p.m. screening of The Impossible. She added that this was not a surprise to the six remaining employees of the theater, who have known of the impending closure since September. Representatives from The Movie Experience, which operates the Fremont, could not immediately be reached for comment. Neither could the owners of the historic building. The assistant manager said that while the main screening room would close, the adjacent Mission Cinemas’ four theaters would remain open for approximately a week. Theater management posted the following statement on Facebook: “After 70 years of service, the Fremont theatre will be closing its doors after the last shows tonight. On behalf of everyone whose [sic] been with the company over the years, we'd like to thank each and every one of you for your support. You were as much part of this place as we were. We'd like to send a special thanks to the general manager, Mark Scaccianoce, for all his hard work and dedication in making the theatre the best he could under the circumstances he was given.”
